Contrary to popular belief, Ten Ren, while a national and very famous brand of tea shop that spawned a bunch of cafes in Southern California (and a few parts in the USA), they are not the best place for tea.
For something more exquisite, high end, give Wang De Chuan 王德傳 a try.
This is their flagship store, but they have outposts in the basement of department stores (like one of the Sogo's, and the Eslite bookstore that's 24 hours at Dunhua South Road).
The tea is not cheap here, but rest assured they are very high quality (think Red Blossom tea shop in San Francisco Chinatown, but cheaper). If you would like to sample, they will brew some for you on the spot.
Their lower end signature red tea is simply out of this world
德傳滇紅 (De Chuan Dien Hung) from Yunnan (China), refreshing with a delicious aftertaste that lasts a while. Imagine if all tapioca milk tea shops used something like this as a base, and if brewed correctly, would just be unbeatable. But this tea is great enough to just drink as is. Get a sample of their teabags (when you purchase a certain amount) just to try, you will not regret it. There is a green tea version (Dien Lu) that I have not tried yet, but I bet it is good.
For the slightly higher end stuff, Pilochun (green) and Dragonwell are all very very excellent. Then you have the white teas (pricier) and higher end Taiwanese mountain oolongs that cost more than US$75 for half a pound.
Perfect for gifts, and for a taste of supreme tea.
