Situated in "OBZ" (Observatory) the bohemian student neighborhood of Cape Town, 33 South is in the center of everything hot and happening! Jam-packed with quaint bars, vibey restaurants of all sizes, atmospheres and flavors, live music venues, pool bars and so much more; as well as a stones throw from the train line and a great supermarket, Obz really is the place to be. From popping into the local fresh, organic food market on Saturday, to live music concerts in the botanical gardens on Sunday evenings – to adrenaline pumping adventure sports and other great venues - Cape Town has lots to offer! Our room prices start at R130.00/pp for dorm rooms to R410 double rooms for 2 people sharing. We also offer Summer specials where our 8 bedroom dorms go for R120 pp/night.

Observatory is a bohemian and culturally rich neighbourhood in Cape Town; the perfect setting for this characterful backpackers. Hosting up to 28 people in an old Voctorian house, each dormitory room is creatively decorated in the theme of a Cape Town neighbourhood, e.g. Kalk Bay, De Waterkant, District 6 and Khayelitsha, which is decorated with corrugated iron and “Lucky Star” Pilchards packaging. The communal bathrooms are spacious and light and there is a nice courtyard/chill area out the back. A big, homely kitchen is where breakfast as well as dinner is served, and every Friday night there is a traditional “braai” (barbeque). The backpackers is conscientious in terms of recycling, lost property boxes (the contents of which are donated to charities), and has recently been made wheelchair friendly. In the TV room/reception area there is a small library with books from bookcrossing.com – check the inside cover of your next book to see where it has travelled!Recommended for:Backpackers

Set in a big and beautiful Victorian house, this is a very comfy and homely hostel. There are a few dorm like rooms as well as private. The decor is quite funky. The staff were friendly and welcoming and seemed to take pride in their clean hostel. Breakfast is included and guests can make use of the kitchen, which is nicer and larger than many hostel kitchens I’ve cooked in! There’s also a rotating evening meal available (currently between R60-80). But if you’re staying a few days you should definitely also try out some of Observatory’s decent cheap eats on Lower Main Rd only a stone’s throw away. The Gypsy Bar, part of the hostel just next door, gets some great gigs. Although I’m assured that they are respectful of neighbours and guests wanting a quiet night and cut the noise at 11pm.
