Think of a hostel with added perks, the look of a hotel, and the unbeatable location of San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, and you've got 500 West. Stepping inside, it almost looks like a museum or even an old college dorm building. There's a cool, dim lobby with stone floors and a fireplace, a smattering of sofas and armchairs, and an impressive YMCA gym connected to the hostel. The rooms are small and cozy, but not like a youth hostel where 6-10 people share; I believe the max is 4 to a room (though bathrooms are detached and communal). When I opened the room window, I loved that I got a fresh breeze from the bay and not the smoggy downtown gunk you'd get in LA or another big city. The cute detached wardrobe made the room feel homey, while a little flatscreen TV is a pleasant surprise. Maria, the housekeeping manager who has worked at the hotel for 19 years, told me that it feels like home - and to stay on the 6th floor, because "it's much quiet than the others."

I would not have realized from the outside of the building that this was actually a hostel, and the spacious lobby doesn’t make it immediately apparent, either. The location could be far worse for a cheap place to stay downtown, although you’ll have to contend with street parking if you don’t plan on taking public transportation during your stay. The room was a little bit small and the sheets and comforter were about the quality you would expect from a hostel, but nothing immediately leapt out as sketchy. Simply because it’s a hostel, though, I probably wouldn’t leave anything expensive in my room. Bathrooms are also communal as in most hostels, although they’re a little better than average because each shower and toilet is in its own lockable room. There were also quite a few of these combos, so there probably wouldn’t be too much waiting involved. The fitness center located off the lobby is actually the YMCA and isn't included in your stay here, and yes, the elevator is a rocket ship of doom.

This hotel/hostel is walking distance from all the San Diego action, so you probably won't be staying in your room much. This is a good thing, because there really is no reason to stick around the hotel. Though there is absolutely nothing wrong with this spot there is also nothing great about it. The rooms are tiny and so is the ceiling fan, which might be a strange thing to notice, but in the heat of summer I bet those little rooms turn into saunas. Also, did anyone else feel a little spooked in the halls? I kept thinking I was going to see the Shining twins around every corner. I guess I'm being a little overcritical...the rooms are clean and the staff is super nice. Plus you can use the YMCA for a mere $10 a day! Not bad! This is a good spot for someone who is on a major budget and doesn't mind sharing bathrooms. Fine with me! I would come back.

The 500 West is a good option for those looking to save a buck while still staying within walking distance of Gaslamp District attractions. The building is old, the bathrooms are shared (European style, they say), and the elevator license was expired during the time I was there. It was still in operation.
Regardless, the stay was comfortable and I found the rate was very good. There's a cafe and bar downstairs that's pretty affordable. The woman there even gave me a free pint of beer.
