Rome is filled with precious pieces of art history that a traveler in a hurry could overlook, and this church is one. Secreted inside is Bernini's masterwork Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, a prime example of sensual Baroque sculpture.

Piazza della Repubblica is one of Rome's grand sights if you're traveling by car, much like how PIazza Venezia wows newcomers to the Eternal City. It's not surrounded by tourists and there's a beautiful fountain in the center. The architecture around the Fontana delle Naiadi is equally beautiful, especially at night when the place is dramatically illuminated.

These four fountains on the corners of an intersection in the Quirinale is one of the many small pleasures to be discovered while walking in Rome. Not really worth the trip on their own, but if you go to the intersection, you will be next to Boromini's church San Carlino, which is well worth the trip.

Near Termini, a visit here was the perfect choice for me on a cool rainy Roman day. Wow was I pleasantly surprised! Not only do they have TWO amazing Greek bronzes (really rare, and I was disappointed that the Boxer was at the Met in NYC during my visit) but they also have an eye-opening collection of Roman mosaics. The ...

Santa Pudenziana is probably the oldest Christian church in Rome. It doesn’t look interesting at all from the outside, and inside it’s pretty plain, but the main attraction here are the 4th century mosaics (they have been restored). The mosaics (considered to be the oldest in Rome) are very impressive and colorful, they depict some religious scene. It’s worth a ...

Used mainly for opera and ballet performances, the Teatro dell’Opera is also known, albeit to a less degree, as the Constanzi Theatre after the contractor who built it, Domenico Costanzi. Neo-Renaissance in design, the theatre was opened on 27th November 1880 with a performance of Semiramide by Gioachino Rossini, conducted by Giovanni Rossi, which was attended by the Italian royal ...

Rome's Teatro dell'Opera is a lovely opera house. I wish I could say the same for the art here. The last thing I saw was a tribute to Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The sets were gorgeous, the dancing less so. The 80 year old Carla Fracci took it upon herself to play the sexy nymph in Nijinsky's Afternoon of a Faun. ...

Pantheon is another breath-taking place in Rome. Another place that is rich in history. The artist Raphael's tomb is inside and so is the first king of Italy. I would definitely go back to Rome.

This place is always packed! But for good reason. It's kind of one of those "must sees" when in Rome. If you go at sunset, it is absolutely stunning to see the shift between day and night. It's a whole other type of gorgeous in the evening. When you go make sure you know the traditions. First have 2 pennies ...

It's gorgeous, overwhelming and breathtaking and is one of those most photographed and recognized buildings in the world. Hip plaza near the Spanish steps. Always something going on. You can buy cheap souvenirs or hire an expensive horse and carriage, so there is more than a faint whiff of the commercial. But that shouldn't be enough to spoil it.

There is a lot to see in the Borghese Gallery but the main reason to reserve tickets to visit is to see the unbelievable Bernini sculptures, particularly, Apollo and Daphne, and Poseidon and Persephone. The exquisite skill demonstrated in those works is amazing. The thin leaves growing from Daphne's fingers and the pliant flesh on Persphone's thigh makes it almost ...

The Roman Forum is a must see. For one, you can buy tickets to the colosseum there and bypass the ridiculously long lines you would have had to stand in if you had bought tickets at the actual colosseum. Two, the roman forum is so awesome! Much more exciting than the colosseum in my opinion. At the Forum, you walk ...

Best scene at night, this is an extravagant monument to the Risorgimento. Many Italians find it tacky, but there is something stunning to behold about a bit of triumphal architecture meant to rival the ancients.
