In any other city but LA, this charming strip of shops (Gant, Alternative Apparel), boutiques (Me. Steves Beauty Cottage, Aesop), and galleries (G2, Hamilton Press) would be THE STRIP, and celebrated as such. But in LA, the shopping cup truly spilleth over, and Abboy Kinney somehow manages to sneak by as one of the lesser sung hotspots in town. Skip ...

I had a great time at this boutique hotel in Venice Beach. The food was excellent, the rooms were very funky and cool, and the staff friendly. The location is a short walk to all the action, but remains far enough away to be very quiet.

You can definitely tell this is one of the Ritz' older properties. Still a nice mix of lux and service, but the rooms are smallish and parts of the facility are looking a little worse for the wear (planters on the tennis courts were falling apart and badly in need of paint). Most of our service was excellent, but turn ...

Talk about a hidden gem! You’d never know this place was here unless someone told you. It’s off an alleyway super close to the beach, and the 1911 home is a historic landmark. They like to call it a “fine boarding establishment,” as opposed to an inn or bed and breakfast, though it certainly feels like it could be either. ...

Although originally built as a hotel, I mistook this Inn for a condo complex by its drab grey stucco walls. But then you reach the vibrant mosaic mermaid mural at the front and the interior opens up to an interesting world. The dark wood and black and white patterned tile floor of the lobby surprised me, as well as the ...

Venice Beach has been called a “human carnival” and a “freak show,” and this hotel embodies that spirit. It’s a great spot for backpackers, Bohemians and international visitors who really want up-close-and-personal interactions with the wildness. Literally, you walk out the front door into the thick of it. Except for very liberal families, I’d advise against it for kids. But ...

New hotel just opened in late November, 2010. It's located right on Marina Beach so it has great views of the marina. Rooms are large and well-appointed. I love the decor. Staff is great too. New restaurant there was fun to try. We sat outside in January around their firepits enjoying a glass of wine.

Viceroy Santa Monica looks so plain from the outside, but once you walk in the doors, it's such a beautiful upscale boutique hotel! Their Poolside cabana with 2 pools surrounded with trees and plants is absolutely beautiful! Such a great place to come and have a drink and lounge away the evening. One of those old school hotels that probably dates from the time that men and women's swimsuits more or less looked the same. The lobby has a piano, a bar, cocktail and food service, and lots of seating. Go around sunset and grab a seat by one of the large windows overlooking the beach and the pier.

I stayed here with my parents and sister in one of the bungalows. The rooms were classy and comfortable, and I was sure glad my parents were footing the bill. A quieter boutique hotel within walking distance of Santa Monica, but not part of the built-up beach scene, the Ambrose has eco-friendly, Zen-minimalist rooms and plenty of extra bonuses that are convenient whether you're traveling for work or you're on vacation. Rates tend to be better-value than at the luxury and beachfront hotels, too.

Not your daddy’s airport hotel—more like your granddaddy’s—if his name is Don Draper, aka the suave lead character on AMC’s Mad Men. They are definitely going for a hip mid-60s vibe here. And I’ve got to give them credit, they’ve done a really nice job transforming the place into a boutique-style hotel. I wouldn’t recommend it if your trip is ...

Designer Anthony Baratta drew out the property’s mid-century roots by ditching the Mediterranean palette in exchange for SoCal hues, Mad Men–era furniture, and Calder-inspired chandeliers. The refreshed hotel reopened in March 2013, complete with restaurant Tower 8, where Santa Monica native and Michelin-starred chef Josiah Citrin emphasizes southern California cuisine like ahi tuna tartare and avocado mousseline as well as ...

I find this hotel overpriced with far too many paid incidentals, including a $30 nightly self-parking fee. At that rate, you might as well spend the extra 5 bucks and spring for the $35 valet. This sleek, cosmopolitan hotel caters to the executive business traveler and upscale tourist. The main hotel is built in a U-shape and sits across Ocean ...
