This hotel has a lovely, relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The building itself is actually a large house in one of Dublin’s more prestigious inner suburbs and the owners live in the house with their kid. As you might expect, the bedrooms are more homey and less hotel-y than in a purpose-built hotel. There’s a fairly large garden at the back of the house and a patio area that is a real sun-trap on a hot day (if you’re lucky enough to be in Dublin on a hot day!). Staying here is a great way to see the less touristy side of the city, but beware of thinking this is ‘the real Dublin’ – there aren’t many real Dubliners who can afford to live as well as this!

The main advantage of the Aberdeen Lodge is that it doesn't seem like a hotel. About two decades ago, the owner, Pat, who lives at the property with his partner and young daughter, converted two adjoining semi-detached homes into this charming guesthouse. The rooms are comfortable and feel more like real bedrooms than hotel rooms. The back patio and garden give ample space for lounging in good weather. I especially liked the discrete location—a quiet, wide-set street in the suburb of Sandymount. It’s not touristy in the least, yet it does have easy access to the centre via a 10-min commuter train ride (the station is just down at the end of the road). It’d recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of quiet and a step back from the usual trappings of upscale hotels.
