Abu Dhabi, The capital of the United Arab Emirates, is one of the world's most modern cities. Rapid development has seen it transformed from mud huts to skyscrapers in little over half a century.

Abu Dhabi is definitely more relaxed than its more cosmopolitan neighbor, Dubai, which is about 1.25 hours away by car. There are (or will be soon) more arts and culture with the opening of the Louvre AD, and artsy architectures in the Saadiyat Island Cultural Center.

More conservative than Dubai but on a building frenzy and no doubt will quickly match Dubai in terms of architecture and attractions. Two days here is plenty in my book but perhaps that will change as the city expands. Far from pedestrian friendly and the sights are spread out. Plan to take taxis. If your time is brief, focus in the Grand Mosque which is truly spectacular and world class.

Abu Dhabi is Dubai's laid back, cultured cousin with a fine appreciation for the arts. With a Guggenheim Museum almost completed and Yas Island where you can rock out with stars like Guns n' Roses, Maroon Five and Black Eyed Peas in the shadow of the world's fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World, you can see what I'm sayin'. The Abu Dhabi corniche is the finest on the Persian Gulf with plenty of places for picnics, skateboarding, rollerblading, strolling or just hangin' with the fam and having a homemade hooka. Malls galore, cinemas out both the yin and the yang and the clear blue water of the Gulf all there in a little place you might have seen in Sex in the City 2.

Aside from the fact that I drove countless extra miles on loop-de-loop freeway ramps and around traffic circles, and came close to crying when I could not reach my hotel due to roadblocks, I liked Abu Dhabi. Its central grid system makes it a little more "real city" feeling than neighboring Dubai, and the corniche alone is a treat of an outdoor space. It's not quite as rich in Arab culture as the tourism department makes it out to be, but it's not bad.

Abu Dhabi beach is an amazing place with a nice weather during winter, but it is hot in the summer.
If you are looking for a perfect place for your next vacation, I recommend Abu Dhabi for you, which the capital and the largest city in United Arab Emiraties.

Abu Dhabi, one of the seven emirates and the capital of the UAE, pales in comparison to the much more fabulous Dubai. However, Abu Dhabi has the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the tops things you should visit in the UAE. If you are visiting for the first time, go to Abu Dhabi first and Dubai second. I did it the other way around so I had higher expectations than I should have.

Another big, modern city in the desert - not a destination that I would voluntarily go for vacation.

I lived here for 4 months as talent on a TV show: HydraExecutives and then as Excellence Ambassador for a 5 Star Hotel, Al Raha Beach Hotel and Resort. I really enjoyed the people, the culture and the amazing hospitality at service at the hotel where I worked and lived. I would recommend this to others. As a woman and also a woman of color--I was initially apprehensive of how I would be received there, but I felt very much at home and accepted by all.

Can't believe the pic this site has chosen to illustrate Abu Dhabi! How about the Grand Mosque, Ferrari World or the amazing Yas Hotel?? Even one of the gorgeous new bridges, the Aldar headquarters or the gold billion vending machine in the Emirates Palace...

Find Hotels in Abu Dhabi:

Description

With one of the highest per capita GDP in the world, the emirate of Abu Dhabi is so opulent, it sometimes seems as if gold should grow on trees (it is, however, dispensed by at least one ATM). While most visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) head instead to Abu Dhabi's flashier cousin Dubai, those in the know head here, to the country's more relaxed and historical city. On a T-shaped island in the Arab Sea, you'll be sure to find beaches just about everywhere. Many hotels even have private palm-fringed beaches (hint: splurge for a day pass). Abu Dhabi's shopping and nightlife is good enough for Carrie Bradshaw; Sex and the City 2 was based here. If over-the-top attractions are what you'd like, you're in luck. Go on an overnight luxury desert safari or head out to a Formula 1 racetrack or, if you wait a few years, when highlights will be the newest Guggenheim museum or a sister Louvre museum on the nearby Saadiyat Island. To experience local culture, try the Heritage Village, a vision of the Bedouin lifestyle, or dine at a falafel shack or at one of the many restaurants serving Arab cuisine.
