Incredibly atmospheric bohemian Egyptian restaurant. Supposedly loved by Omar Sharif. Definitely upscale but drips with atmosphere. The food could be a little better but is still quite good.
Reservations a must. Be sure to take a map. A little hard to find the door but once you see it, it is pretty obvious.Recommended for:

This was the place which kicked off the whole trend for Egyptian restaurants in Cairo - before it opened Caireans tended to eat Italian or French when going out for a meal. The original branch is in the European-influenced Zamalek district, which is well worth exploring before or after lunch for some fine examples of art deco architecture. The restaurant has a great, funky Egyptian retro look and the menu a variation on street food classics like koshary (rice, lentils, chickpeas and macaroni with a tomato sauce topping - sounds a bit unappetising but is very filling and satisfying). Open noon-1am daily.

Every traveler knows that the best local food is found inside the home, where it has been painstakingly prepared by a loving mother. For those without a local contact, then the atmospheric Abu al Sid is the next best thing. Appetizers are the usual assortment of dips and salads and the only standout is the thoroughly authentic mombar (a fried, rice-stuffed intestine). Pass on the pigeon, unless you’re fully committed to eating it the Egyptian-way (bones and all) and order the flavorful fish sayidia, shrimp tajine, or any of the veal dishes. Service borders on terrible, so request the check when you order your tea and after-dinner sheesha. Reservations essential or be prepared to eat at the crowded bar. Serves beer and wine.
