Simply an amazing building with so much history, from being constructed, defaced, and even used to store ammunition. The new museum nearby is also a must see that really puts the Parthenon in context, although you will have to go to London to find some of the marbles.

Like all the structures on the Acropolis, it seems to be in a constant cycle of restoration. Very interesting design but even more fascinating history - I would recommend visiting this one specifically with someone who knows its story (or a good guide book).

You can see findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It is located near the Acropolis. You can't miss it if you are interested in being informed about Ancient Greece.

A place where you can feel you are in a playground; an alternative hot-spot in Monastiraki, too.

The Zappeion is located at the Natural Historic Gardens. The Zappeion was used during the 1896 Summer Olympics as the main fencing hall. A decade later, at the 1906 Intercalated Games, it was used as the Olympic Village.

You can't visit Plaka and the Acropolis without also seeing the Agora! It is the heart of the city, the reason to fall in love with Athens and my favorite place to be.

A "must visit" place of Athens. It's story is quite interesting but the most impressive is the size of the temple. You won't be able to believe how could people living thousands years ago could ever build something like this!

I have been lucky enough to experience both sporting events and concerts at this venue. It is of course the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Most recently I got to experience the ending of the Athens Marathon. It was meaningful and really beautiful and most importantly a source of National Pride.

Visiting just for the changing of the guards is worth it, but there is so much more here. In a lot of ways it feels like the heart of the city.

I would recommend visiting on a day when there isn't a protest, but those seem few and far between lately. If you do go, be sure to find out when the guards change their station. Between the uniforms and their march, I thought the changing of the guards in Athens was better than at Buckingham Palace.
