It's a nice little town that not too many people know about, It has a big mall, garden and fair share of museums. The town is walking distance and there are free shuttles. Everything is cheaper here too.

So many visitors to Australia usually overlook this truly wonderful and graceful city. If you're looking for the outward statement of confidence that is Sydney, or the comparatively slightly more sophisticated edge of Melbourne then perhaps Adelaide isn't for you. This is the home of old Australian money - the people who didn't arrive as convicts and consequently they've always seen themselves as a cut above Sydneysiders and Melbournites. On the global stage, Adelaide is a relatively sleepy city but it boasts some terrific places to stay and eat, as well as being a great springboard for exploring the wine country of South Australia (incidentally, some of my favourites from that part of the world), as well as nearby Kangaroo Island.

I arrived late in the evening off the bus from Dubbo, stayed at the Hilton I think, it was 1992! Caught the Ghan to Alice Springs early the next morning. Wish I'd has time to see the city.

Adelaide was quite pretty, I had a fantastic thickshake the markets.Nice for a weekend away. Barossa valley is lovely with some great little pubs and resturants dotted along they way. South Australia its self is actually lovely, one of the better stated to tour around. No wonder its not flogged with media to attract tourists. South Aussies like to keep it to themselves.

Adelaide is the center of activity for South Australia. This city of a bout 1 million has suffered through hard times in the past couple of decades, as it used to be an industrial area with car manufacturing and other industries, until those were overtaken by foreign imports, mainly Japanese, hurting the local manufacturing.

However, South Australia is also known for its fine wines that grow up on the hills, particularly reds, and is one of the main wine regions of Australia, along with the Hunter Valley in NSW, Western Australia, and the Yarra Valley in Victoria.

Consequently, the local economy has been forced to diversify, and is attempting to make a comeback. It is a quaint city with almost a 1950's USA feel to it, when times were a little slower and less hectic.

Adelaide is a quietly impressive city, there is a Zoo and beautiful gardens to roam and explore. The city is know for the many churches and beautifully designed buildings and halls. Shopping is terrific and access to the Barossa Valley Wineries is quite easy. Take the time to soak up this beautiful city.

There are so many premier vineyards that you can visit & get yourself "drunk" :-)
You can also visit the offshore islands to get close & personal to seals, kola bears & kangaroos.

City of Adelaide lies on a coastal fringe between Mount Lofty ranges and the Gulf of St Vincent. This planned city is abundant with beautifully planned parklands and lakes. The Botanical gardens in Adelaide is is spread out on 16 hectares and is the home for variety of Australian and imported plants. Other locations where you could admire beautiful flora and fauna are the Palm House, Bicentennial Conservatory, Rymill Park, Himeji Gardens and Veale Gardens. While in Adelaide don not miss the Adelaide casino (gambling in a restored railway station), Adelaide Festival Centre ( hub of the festival of arts), beautiful collection of Aboriginal art at the Art Gallery, a ride in the Explorer Train which is a fantastic way to tour the city and a visit to the St. Peter’s Cathedral. Beautiful Adelaide awaits you !

Peaceful for a capital city, and compact we got totally lost down there with a net friend but we saw things you wouldn't normally see from the Botanical Gardens, Scots Church, Myer Centre, the old buildings, it reminded me of Kings Cross all the fun and sights but it was about the same size ... the Cowboy with this white boots and blue swimmers to the kids running around. We usually stay around Elizabeth and get the train in.

Description

A relaxed city with plenty of parks, Adelaide is in the shadow of the Mount Lofty Ranges hills. Settled by British people who vanquished the native Kaurna indians in a matter of 20 years, Adelaide's biggest non-Anglo population is today Italian. Fortunately for the residents, this has contributed to a great restaurant scene, with open-air dining all summer and rich wine lists drawing from the nearby Australian wine regions. The Torrens River running through this welcoming capital of South Australia is just one more pleasant factor making the city a great stop on the way to Western Australia.
