    Djemaa el Fna

    44 reviews

Some snobby people write this place off as "touristy." I don't get it. Yes, of course, the place is crammed with tourists, because you can't go to Marrakech and skip the place, or even go anywhere without passing through it. But there are plenty of Moroccans here as well, and all the storytellers and snake charmers and just random weird ...

    Karnak Temple

    31 reviews

One of the first sights you will see when you visit Luxor. Easily accessible from town and very impressive. Relatively manageable but you'll want to seek out shade during the midday heat. A guided tour is a helpful way to understand what it was like originally and how it was used.

    Kigali Genocide Memorial Center

    5 reviews

A must-see in Kigali. The museum is well orchestrated and respectful. A place for mourning as well as an important repository for information about the genocide, including: key events, causes, and the implications for modern Rwanda. Plan to spend a minimum of 1-2 hours. The audio tour is a must and is both succinct and informative.

    Temple of Hatshepsut

    2 reviews

One of my favorite sights near Luxor -- partially because it can be reached by a nice hike out of the Valley of the Kings. The architecture here is distinctive / a bit refreshing after visiting the tombs. Unfortunately, doesn't make it onto many day-trip itineraries.

    Felucca Ride

    2 reviews

You'll either love it or be absolutely terrified. Either way, I think a felucca ride in Aswan is an absolute must. The boat will rock and you'll definitely feel unsteady on turns but this is the best way to see the riverside and the surrounding scenery is gorgeous.

    Nile River

    9 reviews

The Nile is spectacular. Better known for the sights it passes than for the beauties of the river itself, the Nile is a trip back in time. The best way to see it is on a slow boat. You'll pass archaeological sights, long blades of grass, local fisherman, donkey carts, and gorgeous topography. A lazy day of cruising is a ...

    Bein al-Qasreen

    4 reviews

This stretch of Mamluk monuments--the pinnacle of medieval Cairo--is just north of Khan al-Khalili. It has been beautifully restored in the last decade, and is a bit of an open-air museum. All the monuments are free to enter and the mosques have been decommissioned, so you can go in without taking your shoes off (minor hassle spared). At night, it's ...

    Agricultural Museum

    3 reviews

OK, first of all, you have to like weird old wax figurines, taxidermy and other oddities of museum displays. Because this museum is not so much about agriculture, but about the museum itself--it's completely frozen in time, this weird colonial project in several grand old buildings. Admission is about 3 cents, but you then have to pay bakshish to the ...

    Pyramids of Giza

    143 reviews

If you don't go to the Pyramids of Giza when you're in Cairo, I'll never forgive you (and neither will your friends). All that worry you have about being desensitized to them through overexposure vanishes the moment you stand in their shadow and you see for yourself just how grand they are. Camping on top is risky but possible with ...
