A small but vibrant little town, Airlie Beach is also the launching pad for the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands. The hostels are mostly party-oriented, and everything along the main drag is either a bar, pub, or souvenir shop. Still, it's a great place to hang your hat on a stopover for an islands or Reef trip, and you'll have plenty do to in the evening.

This seaside town ids the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and The Whitsunday Islands. Beautiful and fun and right around the corner of some of the best diving and snorkelling anywhere in the world!

Give me a hippie beach town for a few days, and I'm pretty happy. Add a sailboat, snorkeling, clownishly gorgeous islands and a few 10' nurse sharks and Whoa, Nelly. It's travel heaven.

Airlie Beach is a good base if you're visiting the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. It's filled with young travelers ready to party. On our first day we drank a bucket of Coronas for $5 Australian dollars. Can't beat that! Most of the time you just chill on the beach and taste the myriad of rums at the Rum Bar: http://www.fishdvine.com.au/airliebeach.html
