    Butrint

    3 reviews

The whole area around Butrint is a National Park, protecting a huge national and cultural heritage of Ottoman and Venetian castles with Roman villas as well as unspoiled nature. Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury raised money to finance archaeological excavations at Butrint, such as the Greco-Roman theatre which is still standing but whose floor is filled with water in which ...

    National History Museum

    2 reviews

Right on Skanderbeg Square. The most fascinating displays were the 2nd floor exhibits on the 40 years of communism following World War II. Albania under Enver Hoxha was what North Korea is today - an extraordinarily closed society under a hardline communist regime, a country foreigners knew next to nothing about. Hoxha ruled with an iron fist, a hardline Stalinist ...

    Rozafa Castle Ruins

    2 reviews

The highlight of the Rozafa Castle is its stunning location and views of, Shkodra, the Albanian Alps, and nearby lakes. An excellent introduction to Shkodra and the north. The on-sight museum is small but exhibits are nicely presented. You may need to make a call in order to ask that it be opened.

    Blue Eye of Kaprea

    1 review

This gorgeous waterfall and pool of blue water are a feast for sore feet at the end of the trail from Nderlysa. Plan to spend extra time at the nearby treetop "cafe." A great reward for a relatively short hike (2-2.5 hours).

    Kaprea Valley

    1 review

The Kaprea Valley is lovely. The highlight during our visit was a hike to the Blue Eye Waterfall. The river along the entire path is gorgeous and there are a number of make shift cafes that make for a relatively easy venture into the wilderness. Hiking boots are recommended but the hike is easy and a properly prepared tourist in ...

    Bledar Jubani

    1 review

Based in Tirana but originally from Valbona in the north, "Bledy" is one of the best outdoor guides I have had and he runs trips throughout Albania and into Kosovo and Montenegro. Young, energetic, smart and with a great sense of humor. This young man is going places so go with him while he is still willing to guide. bledarjubani@yahoo.com ...

Great beer garden / bar with good people watching. Probably miserable in winter but the perfect place for a low key summer evening.

    Nderlysa

    1 review

This lovely little village is the perfect launching point for hikes to the nearby Blue Eye or Thethi. You could easily be forgiven for thinking you have been transported 100s of years back in time. This village is very rural and animals rule the land.

    Kaprea Valley Cafes

    1 review

The makeshift cafes / bars of the Kaprea Valley were an unexpected highlight of my visit to Nderlysa and the Kaprea Valley. Residents of the nearby village(s) have set up pleasant seating areas (some in tree houses) and are all too happy to pull a cold beer or lemon soda from the cool waters of the river to quench your ...

    Valbona Pass

    1 review

This hike to this pass from Thethi is a relatively easy 4 or so hours (depending on your speed). The views here are spectacular and the altitude isn't a problem (1,960m). Exercise caution on some of the ledges as the mountains here are a bit crumbly.

    Fierzë-Koman Ferry

    1 review

This ferry service is run on small boats fashioned out of old buses. You wouldn't know this unless someone tells you but once you are aware, hard not to notice (and worry just a little). The boats are quite comfortable and the journey on Lake Koman is spectacular. Schedules are infrequent and this is primarily a commuter route -- so ...

    Piramida

    2 reviews

To some an eyesore, to others the quintessential symbol of Albania's struggle with its communist past. Iconic but in disrepair. Still a flashpoint among locals as the debate continues regarding the future of this monstrosity / treasure. The people watching here is excellent. The more adventurous traveler can scale to the top for a nice view of the city.

    Skanderbeg Square

    1 review

This grand communist era square is flanked by many of Tirana's main attractions. If you only had an hour in the city, this would be the area to focus your time. The National History Museum, Opera, Et'hem Bey Mosque, Clock Tower, etc. are all right here.

    Lake Koman

    1 review

This gorgeous lake is every bit as lovely as the Li River (near Guilin) but completely undiscovered by most people outside the Balkans. Poised to be a major tourism success, you can still take the slow boat (used mostly by commuters) and enjoy this gorgeous spot mostly to yourself (and the locals) plus any fortunate souls that you choose to ...

This pleasant treelined street is home to a couple of artists and makes for a nice stroll. More for people watching than any specific destination or activity.

    Himara

    1 review

This lovely beach town is a 2.5 hour drive south of Vlore. The town is bigger than nearby Dhermi but offers visitors a nice little commercial promenade that is convenient but still quaint. Accommodations are limited but this is one of the more pleasant towns we passed through on our journey through the Albanian Riviera.
