What visit to San Francisco would be complete without a trip to Alcatraz? The history of Alcatraz is particularly unique and interesting, and you can get a nice tour once you're there. But what makes it great for me is the view, the ride over and most importantly the breathtaking experience of being on this unique historic island.

Another classic landmark of San Francisco, Alcatraz was the infamous island prison that no prisoner ever escaped from. Long in history and conspiracy, Alcatraz is definitely a spot all tourists need to visit.

I did the night tour over the summer, and I was surprised on well everything went. You can pick what tours you want to see and explore the island at your own leisure. When I went they let a few of us go into the cremation room... They only let groups of 4 go in and the only light was a lantern that they gave you. It was super creepy!

With its unique history, Alcatraz is a stunning contrast to the postcard-worthy views that surround it. The island is imposing even from afar.

What a neat tour! Kind of spooky, but worth it. Loved the boat ride over as well. The sf bay is so beautiful!

This is a great experience. You get to tour the whole prison and listen to the narration of the history of it all. There are some great views of downtown SF from here too. The boat ride over can be a little rough if the weather conditions aren't ideal so pack some sea sickness pills if you tend to suffer from this.

Perhaps an obvious tourist destination, but worth going to see. Whatever your views on crime and punishment you should see this place for yourself.

The stories abound on Alcatraz Island, and whether you're here as a curious tourist, history lover, or folklore believer, it won't disappoint. Tour the formidable prison and the solemn grounds, and pause for a moment at the solitary confinement units (which really freaked me out). The whole experience is solidified by a choppy ferry ride to and from the lone island, and a viewing of The Birdman of Alcatraz or Escape From Alcatraz that evening. Plus, you can even take haunted tours of the grounds at night. (No thanks, personally.)

Description:

Alcatraz was once a prison for some of America's most dangerous criminals. Today, it is part of the National Park Service and is considered a must-see for visitors to San Francisco. The island tour is captivating for its history and beauty. Dress warmly even in summer because the island can be breezy and the prison is cold and damp. Ferries to Alcatraz depart from Pier 33.
