Madrid is a city with history, culture, energy and, conveniently, plenty of Spanish speakers. For those who want to learn the language (for free!), there are frequent opportunities for people who want to learn English to meet up with people who want to learn Spanish and practice with each other over tapas and sangria.

Alcala de Henares is a fantastic, budget-friendly day trip from Madrid. It's easily accessible by catching a Cercanía train from Atocha train station. It's a historical city, known as the birthplace of the famous writer, Cervantes and much of the architecture looks as though it hasn't been touched for hundreds of years. If you can visit Alcala during the Cervantes ...

Beautiful and almost magical, this old city with a medieval feel has cobblestone streets and golden yellow walls. Segovia is world famous for her castles and cuisine and is a superb day trip from Madrid, Spain. Visit the ancient aqueduct. Take pictures of the Alcazar (the castle that inspired the Walt Disney castle!). Eat roast suckling pig. And enjoy.
