Alessandro Downtown Hostel

Via Carlo Cattaneo 23, 00185 Rome, Italy
6 reviews

The best thing about this hostel is the friendly staff. The place is not exceptional, but it isn't horrible either. It is what you would expect from a hostel. The location is the best feature being only a few blocks from Termini station. If your goal is to see more of the city than your room, then this hostel is ...

0.24 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel
    1 review

The church in its current form was commissioned by Pope Hadrian I around the year 780, and built on top of the remains of a 5th-century structure and was designed to house the bones of Saint Praxedes and Saint Pudentiana. The two female saints were murdered for providing Christian burial for early martyrs in defiance of Roman law. The basilica ...

0.17 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel
    1 review

We have taken many Context Travel tours in Europe and the USA. In Rome, they have been great for visiting the Vatican, where there is so much stuff, the docents help you focus on what is important and skip the rest. Or the Coliseum and Imperial Forums, where background information about ancient Roman history helps to understand what you are ...

0.69 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel

The Basilica of San Clemente is one of Rome's more interesting and lesser known gems. It's an excavation all in itself. You enter at ground level and think, oh, whatever, baroque church, blah blah blah. But then, you get to descend to a very well preserved Medieval church on the level below. Two churches, built one on top of the ...

    Capuchin Crypt

0.86 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel
    15 reviews

This succession of rooms below the Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata at the base of the Via Veneto is one of Rome's best secrets. Capuchin monks unearthed the bones of 400 or so of their brethren and created this multi-room sculpture/meditation on the ephemeral nature of our earthly existence. Seeing pelvic bones arrayed in fan shapes and vertebrae in trailing ...

This is just too cool to miss. More imposing in person than expected. But hard to do justice in a photo. Lots of tourists almost all times of year, but still do it.

Wonderful art gallery and library in an astonishing building that also houses Galileo's academy. The entrance fee is a few euro which gives you access to wonderful art and statuary. Splendid and in a great neighbourhood in Rome.

    Trajan's Column

0.88 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel
    23 reviews

This incredible column is inscribed with a spiralling bas-relief which recounts the story of the Emperor Trajan's Dacian wars. Funnily, a statue of St. Peter was plunked atop it in the 16th Century. What I really enjoy about this column is its absolute giant grandeur, as well as the knowledge that you could actually climb up all the way inside ...

It may not technically be the heart of Rome but it was here on these steps that I felt in tune (as much as a tourist can be) with this great city. Can't think of a better way to watch the sun go down than with someone you love, sitting on the Spanish Steps in Rome, sipping on some fine ...

My first sight of this corner was from the back of a motorino, and it crystallized the particular beauty of Rome for me. On this traffic choked four way intersection, air heavy with smog, these four incredibly elegant statues stand watch, reminding us of the layers upon layers of time the city has seen.

Presidential palace, formerly the temporal home of the papacy when the pope still ruled the papal states. Definitely the case that the presidential court in Italian has all the trappings of monarchy. Grand and yet somehow understated.

    Santa Maria della Vittoria

0.59 mi from Alessandro Downtown Hostel
    18 reviews

One of those treasures that's all too common in Rome, Santa Maria della Vittoria houses the incredible Bernini sculpture "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa" so circumspectly that you'd never know it was there. The church is beautiful, but the sculpture itself, like so many of Bernini's works, is truly masterful.

The museum isn't large but it's quite nice. I caught the Tintoretto exhibit and, while it seemed a bit expensive compared to other Rome offerings, the paintings were magnificent. The museum is just next to a nice scenic view point, as well as several beautiful cathedrals and a large park.

Believe it or not... who would have thought about stumbling into an Irish pub... in Italy... mere blocks from the Colosseum?! It's actually a pretty spot on themed pub.
