In the heart of Rome sits the grand Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore where major streets converge. The huge church is a great spot to take a break, especially since it's so beautiful. Take in the beautiful mosaics and, for the love of God (literally), don't forget to look up.

The church in its current form was commissioned by Pope Hadrian I around the year 780, and built on top of the remains of a 5th-century structure and was designed to house the bones of Saint Praxedes and Saint Pudentiana. The two female saints were murdered for providing Christian burial for early martyrs in defiance of Roman law. The basilica ...

I liked the Rome railway station well enough. It was busy, as many major city train stations are. I didn't have any problems though. I came in from Pisa and then left to Florence through this station. Despite jokes about the trains not running on time after Mussolini, I had no problems.

We've visited the Colosseum and Roman forums with Context Travel docents. Highly recommend them. Having someone explain the history and purpose of the ruins adds so much to appreciating the sights.

Good to visit to get a view of the city. Beware of pick-pocketers (as always-- if someone tries to give you something "for free," they probably will chase after you and demand money). That said, nothing to go out of your way for, just some place to chill if you'd like!

The Arch of Constantine (Italian: Arco di Costantino) is a triumphal arch in Rome, situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312.[1] Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, ...

Flanked by grand neoclassical colonnades, this landmark piazza was laid out as part of Rome’s post-unification makeover. It follows the lines of the semicircular exedra (benched portico) of Diocletian’s baths complex and was originally known as Piazza Esedra. In the centre, the Fontana delle Naiadi aroused puritanical ire when it was unveiled by architect Mario Rutelli in 1901. The nudity ...

Trajan's Column is a Roman triumphal column, which commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It was probably constructed under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the order of the Roman Senate. It is located in Trajan's Forum, north of the Roman Forum.

Rome is filled with precious pieces of art history that a traveler in a hurry could overlook, and this church is one. Secreted inside is Bernini's masterwork Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, a prime example of sensual Baroque sculpture.

I absolutely loved the Basilica di San Clemente! It's like traveling through time as you go down the layers. At times, I was the only one in each room, making the effect especially spooky. Here's a fun tip: Stand behind the altar in the early Christian temple and imagine what it might've been like to be a Priest in those ...

Really cool (and really creepy) place to check out if you're exploring one afternoon. Just off the Barberini metro stop, this tiny chapel is open to the public for a 'donation' of your choice. There are three small rooms within the chapel, and each is decorated with human bones (the remains of Capuchin monks, dug up by a later generation). ...

Indulgence granted for climbing the steps on your knees. Difficult but surely rewarding. Recently however some deterioration is happening with the wooden steps which came from Jerusalem so the church is asking for some donation for its rehabilitation.
