The dark, mahogany interior of the Algonquin lends an entirely classy feel to this historic hotel, while the New Yorker cartoons used as wallpaper pay homage to the countless writers, comics and artists that frequented the hotel's Oak Room for dinner and drinks. Located in the heart of Manhattan - Times Square and 5th Ave. are only a few blocks away - this is a great hotel to stay at if you've never been to NYC before and want to explore. The rooms are pretty tiny, as is the bathroom, but that's to be expected for Manhattan. Guests receive a free drink coupon upon check in - always a plus.

A venerable New York hotel with decades of Big Apple anecdotes at its shoulders. This is where the New Yorker magazine was born, and where the Algonquin Round Table met for its daily repartee. Ask the staff for their stories, you'll want to sit down and listen for hours.

Something about the traditions oozing through the pores and doors of the Algonquin grabs you the minute you set foot inside. Glory days flash by, roaring twenties, post war boom - you just feel this place has been there and back. And it has. Have to say that although it is listed as 4 to 5 star, that rating might be residual from the days when it actually was. These are not super luxe lodgings, but the beds are great, the shower was nice, and the staff was lovely. If you want to be a part of Big Apple history, stay at the Algonquin -- if you want to live the lap of luxury with high star ratings - stay somewhere else.
