If you’re looking for dorm-style accommodations, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place more convenient than this one. From the train station, take a left down the main drag until you get to a big piazza, then check in at Hotel San Geremia (which specializes in smaller private rooms). The clerk will take you several yards away to Calderan, which is full of cute, comfortable rooms with two, three, or four twin beds (or, upon request, a double bed). There are no frills and no breakfast, but the rooms all have lots of natural light, free wi-fi, and some even have tiny balconies. This is a popular spot for groups, especially those interested in visiting the Jewish ghetto just several blocks away. Keep in mind that the rooms are closed from 10:30am-2pm for cleaning, there’s a 1 am curfew, and they only take cash. Also, check-in is officially at 2pm, though you can show up earlier and leave your bags near reception next door.

This is the ideal place to host workshops in Venice. In fact, it might be the only place that’s so naturally suited for hosting big groups – especially students who are willing to share rooms. The staff is friendly and flexible (for instance, letting me choose how many beds I need in each room), and lots of the rooms overlook the Campo San Geremia with its church and Palazzo Labia. It’s also just a good economical and convenient option for anyone, as it’s an easy walk from the train station, a produce market, the Jewish quarter, and lots of restaurants. The amenities are very basic (you get what you pay for), but there is free wi-fi. Point of note: the reception is at the nextdoor Hotel San Geremia, which is geared more towards non-group travelers. There’s also a fun pizza place down the road – Ae Oche (a goose super-hero themed joint) – which might be the only place in Venice (or Italy) where you can buy a pitcher of beer.
