You know the feeling you get when a hotel is just trying too hard? That's what the Aloft is in Portland. Pros: close proximity to the airport, cool mod design, lobby-level pool table and bar with live music, 24-hour swimming pool and fitness room. Cons: overrun with kids and dogs, inefficient staff, no bathtubs in the rooms. Amusing to see all of the Portlandia branded gear (T-shirts, etc.) for sale!Recommended for:

Got a room! Aloft is very modern with amenities suited for today's traveler. There's no need to leave the hotel when food is available downstairs outbid their kitchen or market. Meet new people at their hip bar or pool. You can even enjoy billiards or surf the Internet on their iMacs in the lobby. It's a great place to stay. There's a train stop outside, so downtown Portland is only a ride away.

I don't like walking into a hotel that looks like a sports bar or office. You may feel differently but after a twelve to fifteen hour flight from Europe or Asia, I want something soft, warm, that I feel would guarantee me a good sleep, or look as if it would. The open beam pipe style is not, for me, a very attractive modern style.
I hate to say it, but my impression was that it appeared to be appealing to a wider market (younger no doubt) but not so much to the comfort of the discerning guest.
Having said that this hotel is a trendy hotel - and is marketed as such - that may attract, despite its location, more than just the out of state traveler.
The room was very nicely appointed, comfortable and very clean.
If you like the open style type hotel with all the usual amenities, then this would be a good reasonably priced hotel for you!Recommended for:

Located just opposite a strip-mall (not a bad thing considering the strip-mall in question has a great selection of places to eat), the Aloft is one of the sleeker of Portland’s airport hotels. They forgo classic accoutrements for more colourful, trendy design elements that are sure to make this place look dated in a couple of decades if they don’t do a massive refurb.
The rooms here are small and on the plain side. Try to avoid booking a ground-floor room if possible, as the y have large windows and feel a bit lacking in privacy. However, all the rooms come with a “Jack Pack”, which is basically a box that allows you to plug in all of your devices (laptops, I-phones, etc) and stream them directly to your flat screen TV. The pool and fitness facilities are pretty standard, but what’s nice about them is that they are open 24 hours/day.Recommended for:

That what 2 nights at the Aloft (via Hotwire) cost me recently. I suppose my son and I could have stayed closer to the Downtown action, but with TriMet and at this price, we did just fine.
My son particularly enjoyed the pool, the pool table, and the modern Mac Lobby computers. For me the bed was comfortable, the shower was one of the best I've had, and it was fun to hang out at the WXYZ bar. I'm sure I'll be back.
