Alpine Inn is a weathered establishment that I imagine finding in the middle of nowhere, an oasis of classic burgers, fries, and soda after a thousand mile stretch of lonely highway. Instead, it is randomly in the Silicon Valley near Menlo Park / Palo Alto.
What I like about Alpine Inn is the history on the walls. As I waited for my burger, I read historical facts about the place, including how it exchanged hands with many owners over the decades. My favorite story is the one where the place fell into new hands because it was put up (and lost) in a dramatic wager in a poker game! How cool is that.
I found the burgers extremely buttery, but tasty nonetheless. The french fries portions are humongous. Though the backyard seems like a refreshing place to eat, don't do it unless you like the company of furry little bees.Recommended for:History Buffs

Great burgers and fries with a big beer garden in back. This place is a classic - feels like the old west. Locals still refer to it as "Zotts" - as it was once Rozottis I believe. Nice place to come sit in the sun, have a beer and enjoy the afternoon.

A great place to stop by and hang out. It's casual and it's comfortable as an old friend. The people watching and outdoor ambience is worth the trip alone. The burgers and fries are also very good.

A dive bar for rich people!
Seriously, a long-established and much-loved establishment. I'd never heard of it until some former Apple colleagues had a meetup here last year. Food is greasy spoon; the fries are killer and go great with your beer. Speaking of which, they have dozens of varieties in cans and bottles and several on tap.
Just watch out for the aggressive blue jays and their guano.

If you're looking for a fairly simple bar with wooden tables, a large outside back yard, beer, and greasy burgers, this is a good option. Located in Portola Valley, it feels like a dive/biker bar, but with a Silicon Valley crowd. Located in Silicon Valley, but out in the countryside, it's a nice drive away from Highway 101 or the traffic of El Camino.
