Amidst a sea of hotels in Melbourne’s central business district, the independently-owned Alto Hotel needed to stand out from the crowd. Ultimately, they chose to become the most environmentally sustainable hotel not just in Melbourne, but in the entire country. The hotel has the lowest energy and waste expenditure per guest, it’s completely run on renewable energy and even their pens are made from corn starch. Naturally, all this gives the impression of a dilapidated hostel, but the Alto is pristine. It hasn’t just won countless awards for excellence (framed and hung all over the lobby) but it even has a library with a fireplace and free (fair trade, women-owned) coffee, an astounding smoker’s lounge and a chill-out lounge with massage chairs, TV and wine. I was completely blown away by this absolute gem of a hotel – frankly, their 4 stars is undervaluing the place.

Unlike some other hotels that I’ve been to, the Alto Hotel on Bourke Street does not try to pass itself off as a 5-star hotel when it is obviously not. The hotel’s manager whom I spoke with at the front desk told my boyfriend and I honestly that the hotel is a 4-star hotel, but boasts some unique features that set it apart from the competition. For one thing, the hotel goes out of its way to be environmentally friendly: Water is reused when possible, parking is free for Smart cars and hybrids, the building is outfitted with electricity-saving devices, and bees on the rooftop provide honey for the hotel’s kitchen. Other touches that I thought were nice were the coffee machine that is free for guests to use at any time and the helmets provided for guests if they want to rent the public bikes located around the city. As far as the rooms go, they’ve all been recently refurbished and the beds are nice and big, but the bathrooms are still pretty small.
