Amansala is a beachy hipster hotel set on a gorgeous stretch of white sand beach. It’s known for its ‘bikini boot camps’ which, as the name suggests, integrate intense work outs with total relaxation on the beach. (Work out areas include 2 huge yoga studios—one with breathtaking views of the Caribbean—and the beach.) Good, whole food also is included in the boot camps, and is served in a breezy indoor/outdoor restaurant. The rooms themselves face the ocean and are located within 2-story thatch-roofed structures with stone-inlayed walls, exposed tree trunks, and bamboo—definitely bohemian-ey in style. As expected, the place is geared towards women, either travelling in groups or on their own, which gives it a different vibe than other hotels along the coast. Not good or bad, just different.

I’m not a big yoga and work out guy (by which I mean, I do very little of either!) so I can’t judge how much those things add to the overall appeal of this hotel. Amansala is certainly well-known for its yoga options and “bikini boot camp,” and it seems the majority of guests here come partly or entirely for that reason. The yoga and exercise rooms are appealing, with large windows and rich hardwood floors; the large room over the restaurant has views of the Caribbean. The rooms are built in the classic Tulum boho style, with palapa roofs, large windows, wood beams and polished cement floors. The grounds and outside structures—the walkways, the stairs, the decks—were showing some wear, however. The beach is as beautiful as ever. All in all, a nice reliable place, especially for yoga buffs.Recommended for:Spiritual Seekers

If this resort were anywhere but Tulum, I'd have left partway through the trip. The service was unbelievably bad. Not slow, I mean neglectful and dishonest. The owner of the resort treats the local mexican staff like trash and the girls at the front desk follow suit. They are constantly typing away on their computers and can hardly be bothered to look up and help those in front of you. What are they doing on those computers? Writing false reviews online, as I discovered one day while sneaking a peak over one of their shoulder's. Several gals became sick with some "Montezuma's Revenge" while we were there, luckily one person in the trip had brought extra meds. The owner shrugged it off and made some snide comment about "welcome to mexico". The beach was outstanding and the mexican staff would have given the shirt off their back's to make the stay more enjoyable. I suspect when the hollywood crowd comes in, the red carpet gets rolled out. For the average person, however, this place was NOT REMOTELY worth the price. PS check your bill over with a fine toothed comb and be prepared to argue with the owner when you find incorrect charges.
