To really experience the incredible hidden jewels surrounding Mandalay, hire a taxi driver to take you on a day trip to these 3 destinations. You will feel as if you are discovering ancient treasures when you walk around the ruins of the crumbling temple structures. There are some incredible pagodas in these areas with gold Buddha statues, walls coated with painted mirrors that shimmer in the sun and the best part is that most are deserted and peaceful.

Amarapura highlights are the long teak pedestrian bridge over Lake Taungthaman which is a hub of fishing activity. Catch some glorious scenes of waterfront temple life here and enjoy lunch at one of the quaint restaurants on the temple side of the bridge. There are actually monasteries on both sides of the bridge and you will frequently see young monks walking across.

Inwa can be reached by taking a small canoe (boats go across every 1/2 hour or so) to the shore and then picking up a horse-drawn carriage. It is truly an experience to wander the Burmese countryside dotted with temple ruins in the back of a carriage. The road is bumpy and may make you feel as though you're going to fall out the back, but to see the pristine, village life is really surreal. The carriage driver will take you to all the sights including the old watchtower, which is all that remains of one of the ancient royal palaces.

Finally, Paleik is home to the snake pagoda, Hmwe Paya, named after the 3 giant Burmese pythons that sleep curled around Buddha statues. The entire temple is devoted to the pythons and there are hundreds of statues of them with smaller Buddhas seated inside. If you're lucky, you may catch the fortune teller who uses leaves to see your past and predict your future!
