The port town of Ampana is little more than a waystation for those on the way to or from the Togean Islands, it's true, but should you find yourself stuck here for a day or two whilst making transit connections, be reassured that it's not a bad place. The locals are almost pathologically friendly, and just walking down the street you'll feel like a celebrity, though the choruses of 'Hello Meester!' do of course get a little old, and finding a Bintang in this conservative Muslim area can take a little bit of searching.
