What's not to like about central Tokyo's Meiji Shrine (located in the Shibuya neighborhood)? The centerpiece of a beautiful, shady urban park (the Japanese know design), it's an oasis in the concrete ... read more
jungle of the heart of Tokyo. Lined with wooden Shinto torii gates, the approach to the shrine is beautiful, and the sight of women in kimono drifting between pools of light and shadow on the approach to the shrine (itself a lovely collection of pavilions) is a classic postcard of Japan.

this is where NYE goes off in Tokyo. If you'll be in the capital, I'd be here "when the ball drops". Good luck! ^_^

Shinjuku (not actually located at Shinjuku station, but a couple stops east) is a good place to do it. The place is about as cheap as you'll find in Tokyo, and as backpackery as they come, with scruffy 20-somethings from all over the world stopping in for a short stay. The basement showers cost 100Y for 10 minutes but the internet in the lobby is free.

Hey Angela- While there's a better selection of hostels and budget lodging up around Asakusa (like Khaosan Tokyo Ninja on your trip plan), in practice I found Asakusa to be too far out of the centre, requiring a longish train ride to get into the thick of things. While this place may be too backpackers for your tastes, I'd strongly consider looking at lodging in the Shinjuku / Harajuku area, rather than Asakusa. $0.02
