Ann Arbor is a University town and home to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library. It is about 1 hour west of Detroit. It has some great urban bike and walking trails.Recommended for:

Ann Arbor is famous for its funky, creative community and a citywide commitment to organic, locally grown food. The historic downtown is filled to the brim with incredible five star restaurants, wine bars, college dive bars, off the wall boutiques and second-hand bookstores. It's an incredible place to simply walk around and discover something new to fall in with. One of the best times to visit is in the summer, when the city hosts a multitude of free, outdoor festivals and attractions, like the Top of the Park live music series and Shakespeare in the Arb performances.Recommended for:

Ann Arbor is really cool as far as small cities. The downtown is great for shopping with a lot of unique little shops and cafes to check out. There is also plenty of nature nearby so you can mix things up between city and nature.
