The Apex City Hotel is a modern, minimalist hotel right on The Grassmarket, one of Edinburgh's liveliest parts of town.

This stretch of bars, clubs and cafes is popular with tourists, students and business people looking for a bit of R&R. So if you fall into one of those categories then this might be the ideal hotel for you.

Contemporary, light and bright, there are 119 rooms all fully-equipped with free Wi-Fi and 42"LCD TV's. There's Elemis toiletries in the bathrooms and an Apex duck, which is yours to take home if you so wish.

A great destination hotel for meetings and events, once the work is over, the partying is right on your doorstep. For fitness enthusiasts, there's a pool, gym and sauna available at the nearby Apex International Hotel.

I liked the Agua Bar and Restaurant which is a neat little venue for a latte or a light brunch. Children stay and eat free and can choose from their own menu in the Agua Restaurant. The staff are warm and friendly, immediately putting you at ease.

The rooms are once again minimal and modern with everything you would expect, from free Wi-Fi to LCD TV's.

I recommend the suites with living rooms and castle views.

The hospitality as soon as you entered the hotel was very good. The Manager was very nice and helpful who took time out of his schedule to show me around.

There's 119 rooms, 3 conference rooms, one which can be made into a bar. The Executive Suite and Master Suite both have their own dining areas. The decor is minimal, fresh and the rooms were clean.

This hotel is all about the location, as many of Edinburgh's bars and cafes and nightclubs are on this street.

The Agua Restaurant is a nice place to sit and have a light lunch. There's a gym nearby in the Apex International Hotel that guests are allowed to use.

Perfect venue for those on business.

The hotel is literally a block from the Royal Mile. When you walk out the front door and look up, you are in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

When we booked this hotel, our focus was location rather than amenities. The room was adequate - it was clean and we had enough room to put all of our stuff. I would stay here again on my next trip.

I will say, that I emailed the hotel to request a castle view and never got a response, so that was disappointing.

I gotta say I really enjoyed choosing the Apex City Hotel. I was marginally worried about the 2.5 star rating but European star ratings aren't all that consistent. The hotel entrance is small so it's easy to miss. It's right on the Grassmarket which is a convenient walk to the Royal Mile and bus stops to other parts of Edinburgh. The room itself was very clean, flat screen LCD's give it a modern feel. The bathroom has both a bathtub AND a shower and it comes with a Rubber duckie. The included Breakfast is very delicious - it is not just a continental breakfast, the buffet includes various cheeses and meats and pastries, and 1 hot plate can be ordered so you really get to experience a true Scottish breakfast.
