Description:

The Old Port of Genoa was once just a natural inlet. But as both Milan and Genoa became more important, it became an active shipping and trading center - perhaps as early as 500 BC. The first port facilities that we know of on the site were constructed around year 1000 AD. It remained an important site for shipping until the 20th century, when port traffic moved to the western side of the city. In the 1990s, a restructuring reinvented the area as "The Square on the Mediterranean,"and today the neighborhood draws locals and tourists alike to its mish-mash of salvaged old buildings, refurbished port facilities, and new buildings.
