Buzios is the Hamptons/St Tropez of Brazil. It's just a few hours from Rio by car. It's loaded with beautiful beaches...and nobody does the beach like Brazilians...and a cool little town packed with restaurants, bars and shopping. Don't forget to tale a picture with Ms Bardot...

Buzios is happening! About three hours north of Rio, this beach getaway is clearly the place to be. The town is somewhat like the Hamptons of Brazil, only cooler and hipper.
While there are several beaches along this peninsula, there is one that really matters. Geribas is a long stretch of sand that houses nonstop restaurants, grill stands, surf schools and umbrellas. We began our stay on the side of the beach more dedicated to families then we strolled to the other end that caters to the younger surfer crowd. After getting as much sun as our San Franciscan skin allowed, we popped into Fishbone. Here we were still enjoyed the beach scene while snacking on acai and fish. This was indeed an upscale, safe and beautiful beach: a welcome upgrade from Salvador.
At night, Rua des Pedras is the pedestrian only street that’s the heart of downtown. Bustling with droves of people, the many restaurants, bars and shops stay open late. There are several bufe-a-kilo style restaurants, which allowed us to select our meal and pay by plate weight. While we surveyed many buffets, Banana Land clearly had the best and freshest selection. This is also where I discovered Feijoada, a divine traditional black bean and meat dish that I will now be eating and making often.
After dinner there were several bar and entertainment options to select from like the one pictured here, but thankfully we found ourselves at Patio Havana. They feature incredible live musicians amongst Cuba décor and Italian cuisine (it’s eclectic). We also felt this was a better option for us than the nightclub down the street, which is for women brave enough to wear four-inch heels on the cobblestone streets. Before the end of the night, we stopped by the traditional crepe house Chez Michou. We ordered, waited for someone to cry out our name then devoured a monster plate of rich deliciousness.
We were happy to be here on a weekend, as most things are open and busy Thursday through Sunday. I strongly advise either renting one of the incredible houses or apartments, or booking accommodations as early as possible. While there are many pousadas, there are certainly highs & lows. Please see my Buzios hotel reviews for more information and recommendations. Regardless of our less than ideal accommodations, we still loved it here and out come back in a heartbeat…

this place was amazing! just outside of Rio. Was there for about 5 days and not even close to enough time. Its a beach town with a bunch of different coves and each cove is different. Great shopping, great nightlife and the people were awesome!

An amazing resort, with several beaches on its peninsula. You can drive to Buzios from Rio de Janeiro and visiting both places is definitely worth it. Buzios is a much smaller, upscale resort made famous by Bridigitte Bardot in the 1960s. Good surfing in most beaches, but each beach is different so you will never get bored. I could easily spend 7 straight days here just enjoying the beach, the people, and the atmosphere.
