In a city that's home to an exceptional number of truly great museums, the Art Institute may be the best of all. The museum is home to so many famous pieces that it's facile to list them all, and kids will enjoy the excellent armor court. An absolute must for any visitor to one of the world's great culture cities.

The Art Institute is well worth the price of admission (especially on Thursday nights, when it's free!), and really does have something for everyone. They've got galleries that showcase ancient China and contemporary America, and everything in between. Be sure to check out the Modern Wing, which was finished just a few years ago. When you're finished, walk across the street to get some fresh air at Millennium Park.

Top-ranked nationally, this downtown art museum in the Loop on Michigan Ave. holds stop-in-your-tracks treasures, like masters of impressionism, medieval stained glass, Renaissance portraits, and pop art classics. The Asian art galleries are hushed hideaways. Downstairs take the kids to see the historical miniature rooms, like dolls' houses that go skipping across the ages and around the world.

Historic art museum on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, an afternoon at the Art Institute offers a comprehensive overview of art history. The new modern wing (check out Andy Warhol's enormous portrait of Mao) is awesome. The ancient art holdings are extensive, and the impressionist galleries are exquisite. Room after room of creations by a who's who roster of history's most influential artists. Educational & inspiring.

Broaden your horizon and deepen your thought process, explore the AIofC! It has the best collection of impressionism outside France among other masterpieces that encompasses most of the “history of human imagination”. The Institute is by the ‘Millennium Park, another major attraction. If you engage in cultured ventures in Chicago, this should be the number one!

I just about grew up at this place and visit every time I'm in Chicago. They have a terrific collection of Impressionist's work, and now the new Modern Wing has three floors with lots of space for some really great contemporary art. I like the de Koonings, but you may go for the Jasper Johns. It's a big museum, so plan a full day, or maybe take you time and visit twice. The cafe is good, and if you like tiny stuff you'll be gaga over the miniature homes in the Thorne Rooms. Lately I head straight to the photo exhibits.

This renown art museum is located in Grant Park. It has one of the world's most notable collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art as well as significant American art, Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, Asian art and modern and contemporary art.
The recent expansion of the building allows more of the permanent collection to be displayed. It's a little confusing to move between the old and new sections but the staff are around everywhere and can help direct you to where you want to go.Recommended for:Art & Design Lovers
