- Art Series - The CullenOct 21, 2013
The Cullen was my favorite of the three Art Series hotels. It's just as quirky as its eclectically designed brethren, but with a location that I personally feel is unrivaled. The hotel is about 10 minutes by public transport from the center of the city (or 20 if you’re taking the tram rather than the train), but directly across the street from the Prahran Market, a much smaller but equally as happening version of the Victoria Market, and mere steps from dozens of shops, restaurants and bars. The silver cow in the entranceway is a sign of what’s to come as far as decoration goes: it’s a little offbeat and entirely unexpected, but somehow, it just works. It didn’t hurt that the hotel staff was very friendly and the beds were super comfy.Recommended for:

Another entry in Melbourne’s “Art Series,” hotels, the Cullen has a pronounced presence in the surrounding Prahran area. The Art Series hotels, intended to fuse an artist’s aesthetics with the decor of a hotel, already has an installation in Prahran (The Olsen) but the Cullen is its own creation. Designed with artist Adam Cullen in mind, the Cullen is a more modern yet also bohemian reflection of a contemporary artist than the Olsen, which is modelled after the much older John Olsen.
At once dark and wry, you can expect your room to be adorned with paintings of Ned Kelly, laughing dogs or a headless donkey that sometimes stretch out of the canvas and across the walls. The rooms themselves are almost hypermodern and the stay will be certainly be unforgettable. The bar (and the wine list) is top notch and the restaurant is all too happy to compete with the surrounding bistro-heavy Chapel Street, which presents a very fun and trendy area for the equally fun and trendy hotel. Visit the nearby Prahran Market (Australia’s oldest) to make a home cooked meal or let the restaurant put you into a food coma – either way, it’s one of the most enjoyable ways to stay in Melbourne and will give you a tale you’ll keep telling.Recommended for:
