Forget the city center, Chapel Street is where the true heart and soul of Melbourne reside. Kitschy coffee shops and trendy boutiques are what this part of town is all about, so it's no surprise that The Olsen hotel—one of three in the city's Art Series—is itself a bastion of culture and quirk. The colorful works of renowned Australian artist John Olsen (many depicting frogs) adorn the walls and provide pops of color and whimsy against the otherwise sleek grey. Guestrooms feature ultra modern furniture including glass tables and chairs. Kitchenettes also come standard in every room for added convenience, though I’d recommend wandering a bit farther afield to one of the dozens of restaurants or cafes nearby. A heated, open-air indoor pool and small fitness area round out the hotel amenities, but my favorite features are the smart cars and bicycles for hire.Recommended for:

Very trendy hotel located on the lavish Chapel Street in South Yarra. South Yarra is just outside the Melbourne CBD and is home to all types upscale shops and restaurants. Chapel Street is the 5th Avenue (NYC) of Melbourne. You will see more Mercedes drive up and down this street than any other in Melbourne.
The Olsen Hotel echoes this vibe comfortable rooms, fine dining seafood restaurant, and top notch staff. A very nice boutique hotel in South Yarra, VIC.Recommended for:

I haven’t seen many hotels named after artists, but the Olsen is a standout not just for its location and quality, but for the pronounced influence that Australian institution John Olsen has in every corner of the building. While the man is perhaps best known for his landscape work, the artwork adorning the hotel’s walls is curiously focused on the artist’s affinity for frogs, an animal with which Olsen strongly identifies due to its capacity for metamorphosis – so the receptionist assured us.
The rooms themselves are 33 square metres and affirm the impression of a hotel fused with a modern art gallery. The décor’s hard edges and monochromy give it a somewhat futuristic bent, and the rooms all contain an assortment of art books for the discerning clientele the hotel is clearly targeting with its focus on high culture and its location on Melbourne’s favourite place for those with disposable income and an eye for art, fashion, coffee and all things Melbourne: Chapel Street.
This might in fact be the Olsen’s strength, as it presents an alternative for those who are keen to soak up Melbourne’s culture without being stuck in the city’s central business district. The hotel’s proximity to Chapel Street’s ubiquitous fashion stores and cafes, the nationally famous Prahran Markets, and its rentable bikes and smart cars provide its guests with a great chance to say they’ve set themselves up in the real Melbourne – heated pool and boozey sun decks included.
