Costa Rica has been smart about preserving its environment for eco-tourism and rain/cloud forests and wildlife is probably the main draw here. The beaches are fantastic too. Cost of travel is relatively cheap.Stephen Bugno
I crossed the border twice (from Costa Rica to Nica and back again) along Route 1 in the west back in 2009 and had no problems that I can recall. It is a relatively straight forward border crossing. It probably has working hours, so I would go earlier in the day.
- Big Corn IslandBig Corn Island, Granada, Nicaraguarecommended Big Corn IslandAfter a boat journey from hell from the mainland port of Bluefields we arrived at Big Corn Island, an old British protectorate in the Caribbean now administered by Nicaragua. It’s popular little ... read moresister is named, not very originally, Little Corn Island. Life here is laid back and feels like a throw-back to the 1800’s. The sea is quintessentially Caribbean, i.e. a gorgeous blue with beautiful sandy beaches and the majority of people come here to dive or snorkel the pristine, untouched waters, so much so that there's probably more visitors to these islands these days than residents (but that’s not hard with only around 5000 souls living on the island!) The locals in this part of the world have the strangest pigeon English; a sort of a mix of Caribbean and Pirate, and mostly spend their days on their porches watching the day go by, greeting tourists. The food? Well its predominantly seafood with beans and rice. Particularly good is the lobster as the Corn Islands have a veritable stash of these crustaceans off their coast line. Accommodation? We stayed in a brightly painted shack right on the beach and spent our days walking around the island, meeting locals, lazing on our beach, drinking rum and eating lobster. It was a classic beach-bum holiday.Chris Evans
Checkout Big and Little Corn Islands...really lovely.

My recommendation on Managua is to get out of Managua. There is a lot of amazing places in Nica, but I do not know of any in the capital.
