My favorite section of the Aspen/Snowmass Ski Resort is, hands down, Aspen Highlands. It's popular with locals, with amazing side-country skiing, steeps, and powder. It's challenging and gorgeous--a perfect ski hill.

Hike the bowl! Fantastic skiing for those who like steeps and lots of uncrowded groomers for those who don't.

This is the best mountain for serious big mountain skiers...but also a place to get away from the big crowds at Ajax and Snowmass. The highlight is the Highland's Bowl - a hike from the top of the highest lift for the strong of wind and heart, and some of the steepest skiing in North America. But also a place where my kids love to ski - no lift lines and lots of intermediate terrain to compliment the big off-piste skiing!

This is one of the most uncrowded of the four Aspen area Mountains. The base village is newer and relative to Snowmass or Aspen largely devoid of a "scene" with the exception of local's event days - opening day, closing day, and several international holidays.

Description

The daredevil's pick of the four Aspen peaks, Aspen Highlands is a local favorite. Its Highlands Bowl (with a peak of 12,382 feet) and expert tree-lined terrain is known as some of the most extreme ski locations in the country. Plan your trip ahead of time to witness some of the top skiers in the country (and the world) race down the mountain's steep peaks. While there are a few runs for beginners, over three-fourths of the mountain is for more advanced or expert skiers. If that fits your description but you'd still like to be pampered Aspen-style, don't worry; the Ritz-Carlton club in the mountain's village allows you to ski straight to your accommodations, met by your ski valet.
