This strange and beautiful church was the biggest and most important in Assisi until the 1200s - and is where St. Francis and St. Clare both were baptized. It currently houses lots of religious art, including an interesting wooden sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows weeping over the Christ in her arms - an exact copy of a 15th century German terracotta that was recently stolen. This church also houses a museum of the diocese below the main room and a fascinating (if strange) painting installation paying homage to Pope John Paul II to the right of the main cathedral.
