Located in a lovely converted terrace-house (basically the face of the "old" Sydney) in the quiet, leafy eastern suburb of Randwick, the Avonmore has a B&B feel and is ideal for anyone who wants to be near UNSW, the Randwick Racecourse (Australian Derby, anyone?), or the eastern beaches around Coogee. Rooms are large and good-value, particularly for longer stays, and include small TVs and kitchenettes. I'm not wildly crazy about the old-time flowery decor, but the rooms in the old part of the building (circa 1888) have neat classical touches like fireplaces to liven them up. The Avonmore has a relaxed, family feel, but if you're staying here you'll want to be sure you have a car to get around -- public transit to this area of the eastern suburbs is not fantastic.Recommended for:Family Travelers

Really beautiful building – full of character compared with your standard chain hotels and motels – and a really peaceful street, which definitely makes for a good sleep. This is not really a business hotel nor a party place, which might be a concern to those who stumble home from a long day at Royal Randwick Racecourse. Despite Avonmore being a heritage B&B-style hotel, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it boutique, for the simple fact that I feel it needs a bit of a revamp. Even though the rooms are spacious and equipped with the necessities I couldn’t help but feel they were a little sparse at the same time. Great location if you want to be out of the city centre and experience ‘local Sydney’ as opposed to tourists’ Sydney.

I stayed here for a few nights when I was visiting on a conference. The hotel is a renovated Victorian type building and has tons of character - very nicely done. The Manager (George) is really good and makes you feel at home and will do anything for you. The room we had still had the Victorian flavour inside and was a very clean and tidy. Very much recommended for anyone wanting to stay in the area. Good rates to.
