How a place came to be what it is today is something I try to learn when I travel. Although I was aware that American missionaries had played a significant role in 19th century Hawaii, visiting the Bailey House Museum, site of the Wailuku Female Seminary, gave me greater insight into how the culture of Maui changed during that era.
The museum and its garden also provide a peaceful respite from the more developed parts of Maui. Expect to find only a handful of tourists joining you as you walk through the exhibits and grounds.
Before you leave the museum, be sure to pick up a map of the Wailuku historic district, and take a self-guided walking tour of this sleepy part of Maui.
Iao State Park (also known as Iao State Monument) with its iconic Iao Needle is just up the road from the museum. Make it another stop on your visit to the less-visited part of The Garden Isle.
