Cutest spot ever if you want to do Catalina on a low low budget. It's a super short ride across the water.
Get some bikes and ride them across the strand and take time to see the unique houses.

Coming back from San Diego on our way to LA, we made a stop on Balboa Island in search of their famous banana stand (while I'm not a huge fan of frozen bananas, my bf is an avid Arrested Development fan and apparently Balboa Island was the inspiration behind the Bluth banana stand). It's a small island and very quaint - there is a bit of a New England feel to it, with all their white picket fences and narrow roads. We came on a weekend, which is very difficult for parking - if you have the option, come during the week. Main street is very cute, with at least three frozen banana stands on it, all claiming to be the first on Balboa Island. We chose Sugar 'N Spice, waited in line, and finally had the grand prize.....it was ok. I'm not a huge fan of the treat, but it was interesting to see another small town in California and certainly worth a trip on a beautiful day.Recommended for:Family Travelers

Balboa Island was such a cute little place to spend for a few hours. I went here with my family, which was really nice because my parents are honestly old and tired and don't want to go to places that are too lively. The vibe here is very chill. There are little shops everywhere for you to check out. You HAVE to get frozen bananas. There are frozen banana shops everywhere on this island. There honestly wasn't that much to do besides windowshop, but I really did enjoy just walking around and enjoying the breeze on a hot summer day with my family.

Took me back to the Jersey Shore to the days before Snooki and The Situation ruined it for everyone. Skee-ball, a ferris wheel, merry go-round, and plenty of salt-water taffy. There was even a small oceanic museum to make the day slightly educational for the kids. Didn't realize it til we go there, but Tuesday was a great day of the week to go--less crowded, no issues with parking, and a bunch of places were offering discounts.

Ended here by surprise and loved it!
We were driving around made 2 or 3 wrong turns and entered the island main street. Sure we instantly decided to park and take a walk.
The stores, the houses, the boats by the marina and the famous local frozen bananas are awesome.
A nice place to walk, have something good to eat and enjoy a sunny day.
