The most sophisticated and secluded address along Mexico’s Riviera Maya is the Banyan Tree Mayakoba. The entirely separate oasis, with PGA golf course, is cocooned by a network of lagoons. Hop on board the hotel boat tour to spot Turtles and Crocodiles. With the Mexican jungle, Mayan archaeological sites and populous beaches minutes away, this is the definitive residence for an ultra-exclusive haven. Private beachfront allows guests their own portion of the world’s second largest coral reef.

I've stayed at all of the ritzy places along the Riviera Maya, and this is the one I probably liked the best (neck and neck with Esencia, south of Playa del Carmen...oh, and the Tides). Great layout, and all the villas are very private-feeling. Fantastic service. But very spread out--you'll probably be staying more than 1km from the beach, so you have to ride a bike or take a golf cart.

Known as an especially private and elegant resort, the Banyan Tree even has outdoor (and indoor, if you prefer) bathtubs. What better way to enjoy the glorious Mexican weather than a leisurely soak al fresco?

Indoor-outdoor bathtubs with large open-air soaking tubs, each backed by a stone wall inset with 14 scented candles, were built with romance in mind. Just consider the available amenities: tea lights, champagne, and bath products infused with chocolate and honey. Indeed, each of the 107 private villas here feels like a sanctuary, also with its own walled garden and sun terrace.

Incredibly beautiful and private resort. Make sure you request bicycles to make your stay at the resort more convenient and quaint. Food and drinks are VERY expensive, so rent a car or take a cab to lovely downtown Playa del Carmen. The beach club is wonderful as is the spa.
