The most sophisticated and secluded address along Mexico’s Riviera Maya is the Banyan Tree Mayakoba. The entirely separate oasis, with PGA golf course, is cocooned by a network of lagoons. Hop on board the hotel boat tour to spot Turtles and Crocodiles. With the Mexican jungle, Mayan archaeological sites and populous beaches minutes away, this is the definitive residence for an ultra-exclusive haven. Private beachfront allows guests their own portion of the world’s second largest coral reef.

Located in the luxury Mayakoba development on the Riviera Maya, this Mexican offshoot of the much-loved Asian brand is a perennial winner with travelers, thanks to its dramatic architecture (swooping pagoda-style roofs and soaring ceilings) and secluded setting between jungle, lagoon, and ocean. Somewhat surprisingly, the resort scored high on both family appeal and romance: chalk it up to the supreme privacy of the 107 stand-alone villas, which feel like your own walled sanctuary complete with outdoor tubs, pool, and two separate living spaces joined by a garden.

Known as an especially private and elegant resort, the Banyan Tree even has outdoor (and indoor, if you prefer) bathtubs. What better way to enjoy the glorious Mexican weather than a leisurely soak al fresco?

I've stayed at all of the ritzy places along the Riviera Maya, and this is the one I probably liked the best (neck and neck with Esencia, south of Playa del Carmen...oh, and the Tides). Great layout, and all the villas are very private-feeling. Fantastic service. But very spread out--you'll probably be staying more than 1km from the beach, so you have to ride a bike or take a golf cart.

Incredibly beautiful and private resort. Make sure you request bicycles to make your stay at the resort more convenient and quaint. Food and drinks are VERY expensive, so rent a car or take a cab to lovely downtown Playa del Carmen. The beach club is wonderful as is the spa.

If you can afford it, stay at this luxurious resort. Good price/quality ratio and impressive location (with mangroves running through the resort)!

Positively amazing in every way--the service, amenities, food, even the bikes to the beach. Expensive but worth it--can't wait to go back.
