Bari's historical center looks almost like a middle eastern town, except for the Italians everywhere. The food in Puglia, this region, is spectacular, and the location right on the sea feels somehow wild and ancient.

Bari is the capital city of the province of Bari and of the Apulia, on the Adriatic Sea, 5 metres above sea level. It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and an university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas. Since 1930 Bari hosts the famous “Fiera del Levante”, the largest trade fair in the Adriatic. The city itself has a decreasing population of about 330,000, while the fast-growing urban area counts about 650.000 inhabitants.

Despite the studies and research of ancient and contemporary historians who have devoted much time to the origins of the name Bari, the inhabitants still don’t know the etymology of their city’s name.

According to the institutional site the coat of arms dates back to the time of the Crusades: the silver colour represent the pure and chaste faith, while red colour represents the blood shed in its defence. On the left sides of the shield there is an olive branch and on the right a holm oak tied with a green, silver and red ribbon.
Bari is made up of four different urban sections. In the north there is the old town on the peninsula between two modern harbours, with the splendid Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of San Sabino (1035–1171) and the Swabian Castle built for Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district. In the south there is the Murat district (erected by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular grid-plan with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro).
Modern residential zones surround the centre of Bari, which are the result of chaotic development during the 1960s and 1970s replacing the old suburbs that had developed along roads splaying outwards from gates in the city walls. In addition, the outer suburbs have developed rapidly during the 1990s. The city has a refurbished airport named after Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla Airport, with connections to several European cities. review by mybestapulia.com | book, discover, tour, events, tourist information

Description

Bari is a small coastal city in southern Italy. It is an important economic center and port, second only to Naples in the region. Tourists and travelers often make use of the port as a disembarkation point to other countries in the region, and recently more and more have spent time in Bari before moving on. The city’s old town center dates to pre-Roman times and is home to multiple historic sites. Popular destinations include the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, with its gold leaf ceiling, and the ancient Swabian Castle. In recent years the city has become a burgeoning nightlife location, with many bars open through the night. Due to this development, once unsafe locations are now secure and populated. The cuisine in Bari is traditional to the south, utilizing large amounts of pasta, olive oil and breads along with seafood.
