Much of Rio remains compact and densely populated, but head west of Leblon and you'll soon find yourself in the great expanse of Barra da Tijuca. The prime reason to come here is the magnificent beach, whose serene and palm-lined sands stretch for some ten miles. The farther out you go, the wilder it feels, and if you have your own car (or ample cash for a taxi), you'll find scenic little-visited shores with picture-perfect tropical scenery. Surfers won't want to miss Prainha, boasting some of the best waves near Rio.Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts

I would not stay in a hotel here (although the Sheraton is very nice) just because the best nightlife is in Leblon, about 20 mins away and cabs are not cheap. However, the beach is less crowded and just as nice if not nicer than in Leblon. There are modern condos, a shopping center, etc - everything is here but this is not the typical Rio. If you like more peace but still have everything handy, this is a good place to stay.
