Barceloneta is an area of Cuitat Vella known for its beautiful beaches. I may have mentioned this in my review of Barceloneta Beach (which, oddly enough, is not the only beach in the district), but the beaches ARE in fact, nude. Be prepared.

"Barceloneta, peninsula independiente", states a shirt sold by a local vender, and it rings somewhat true. Even as a tourist magnet during the sunny summer days, the neighborhood keeps it feet on the ground, perhaps because the sense of community that still permeates the tiny streets surrounded by the mediterranean sea.

What is not to love about the Cova Fumada, or la Carrer del Maquinista, or the sumptuous church in honor of Sant Miquel, or the vociferous mornings at the Plaça del Poeta Boscà, or the all nighters the locals pool off every summer, the verbenas of Sant Joan, when the music and dancing goes on and on on the streets, to the beat of firecrackers.

    Gotta love Barceloneta.

"Las comidas que jalonaron mi conversión al barcelonismo tenían lugar en los restaurantes de pescado que se adentraban como dedos de madera en la playa de la Barceloneta, una red triangular de edificios de vivienda construida por un ingeniero en el siglo XVIII para dar cobijo a algunos de los pescadores y trabajadores que se habían quedado sin techo tras la conquista borbónica de Barcelona en 1714, y que ocupa el extremo noreste del puerto"

Very cool little neighbourhood with tall buildings and different people than some of the other neighbourhoods we hung about in. It was a nice change, felt more open somehow.

Description

Known as the old fisherman's quarter, the Barri de La Barceloneta in Barcelona, Spain, is one of the most wondrous and popular places in the country. Located on the south side of the city, the neighborhood is rooted as far back as the late 17th century. With traditional narrow streets and traditional homes and buildings, the area retains its village atmosphere even though it is frequently filled ... read more
