Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome, Italy. The famous painting 'Salus Populi Romani', is the oldest Marian image in Rome. It has been a favourite of several popes and acted as a key Mariological symbol. The mosaics of the nave in Santa Maria Maggiore were the definition of impressionistic art during the time period, and it influenced many pavement mosaics across villas in Africa, Syria and Sicily during the 5th century.

One of the major Basilicas and Rome and a favorite because the crib of Jesus is found here, I am a Marian devotee and I love the story on how the church was built. It came in a dream and the Blessed Mother said where it will snow buiild the church. It was not winter but it did snow so the church dedicated to her was built there.

Santa Maria is a beautiful, historic church in Trastevere, which is located in a local, working class neighborhood in Rome. It's small and lovely and worth a look inside. I tremendously enjoyed it.

Enorme y preciosa basílica, tanto por fuera como aún más por dentro. Está prohibido sentarse en su escalinata.
Justo al lado, hay varias paradas tanto de buses de línea como los turísticos.

The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major (Italian: Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore), known also by other names, is the largest Roman Catholic Marian church in Rome, Italy. There are other churches in Rome dedicated to Mary, such as Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, but the greater size of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major justifies the adjective by which it is distinguished from the other 25.

The Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere is a beautiful 13th century church. My guide said the first open Mass was given here.

Nice basillica in central Trastevere. Worth a visit if you aren't "churched out" or need a break between eating and drinking.

Beautiful church with high, ornate ceilings and countless altars. It's elaborate and grand and makes you feel small without making you feel insignificant. It's a little known fact that the tomb of Gianlorenzo Bernini rests here; blink and you could miss the step indicating its location. It's also said that there are remnants of Jesus' baby crib kept here, though this is a topic of debate.

I would pass by this church every day on my way to school, and it always took my breath away. The facade is not as extravagant as some other churches in Rome, but just knowing that it is one of the oldest of its kind is impressive enough. The square is great to sit in and people watch, since it's a nice mixture of tourists and neighborhood residents going about their day. Aside from the annoying peddlers, this church is a must-see in Rome.

Santa Maria Maggiore has had a church on it since the 13th century. It is the largest of those dedicated to the Virgin Mary, thus the name, Maggiore. Apparently there’s 26 churches in Rome dedicated to Mary. I would have thought there were more. There are lots of golden mosaics on the inside and the wooden coffered and gilded ceiling is a huge expanse.

In the heart of Rome sits the grand Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore where major streets converge. The huge church is a great spot to take a break, especially since it's so beautiful. Take in the beautiful mosaics and, for the love of God (literally), don't forget to look up.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important and best preserved of Roman churches dedicated to the Madonna. It rises on top of the Esquiline Hill and is the only remaining example of early Christian architecture, even though it has over time been further embellished.

Work on the current basilica, which was built on top of an earlier church, was embarked on thanks to a wealthy Roman patrician called Giovanni.
According to legend, Giovanni and his wife, who were without child, dedicated a church to the Virgin Mary who had appeared to them in a dream on the night of 4th/ 5th August 352 A.D.
The Madonna had told them that a miracle would show them the location for them to build the church. Pope Liberius also had the same dream and the following day on arriving on the Esquiline Hill, found it had indeed been miraculously covered in snow.. in the heat of August. Liberius then traced an outline of the location of the planned church, the building of which was financed by the married couple.

This then explains why the basilica is also referred to as Our Lady of the Snow and how, every year on 5th August, the miracle of the snow is commemorated with a cascade of white petals descending from the coffered ceiling onto the altar place, an evocative sight really not to be missed.

Of all the geat Roman Basilicas, Santa Maria has the most successful blend of different architectural styles and is one of the most richly decorated. The Cosmatesque marble floor and the Romanesque bell tower with ceramic roundels are medieval. the Renaissance is represented by its coffered ceiling and the Baroque gave the church twin domes and the imposing front and rear facades.

This is one of the oldest churches in Rome and very beautiful. Cool, dark, romanesque. A 12th century church built over a 4th century basilica. It may well have been one of the first places Christians could worship in public. It has that amazing old dark gilded romanesque feel. The Piazza and church of Santa Maria in Trastevere are beauties. The spacious, quaint piazza with fountain in the center is the meeting point of many in this café-lined area of Rome. The church façade is warmed by fading frescoes and golden mosaics of palm trees and biblical scenes.

Not to be missed and just steps from the door of your apartment! Put a coin in the little machine to the left of the altar to see the mosaics illuminated. Have a coffee or cocktail at the Cafe di Marzio opposite the church for people watching. You can catch weddings coming out of the church in the mornings.
