It was December, 2007. I had been living in Istanbul for six months but my fiancee had just come to live with me and we were spending our first Christmas away from the United States. We settled upon a trip to Romania as a great way to spend the holidays and we chose Sinaia, in the Carpathian Mountains, as the place where we would spend the holiday itself.
Bastion Hotel is nestled in the trees on the grounds of Peles Castle. You enter through a large wrought iron gate and walk through a large, stone courtyard to the concierge. The hotel lobby is an impressive room of wood and marble. On that December day it was decorated with a large Christmas tree.
The rooms, on the other hand, have some unusual color choices as the hotel seems to have a thing for pairing turquoise and deep red. That didn't make our stay any less comfortable, however. One of the real perks of our suite was the absolutely massive bath tub, which was perfect for a soak after a brutal day above town skiiing (or trying to). There was also a well-stocked mini-bar that we plundered on more than one occasion.
Throughout our stay the hotel staff were very friendly, calling us cabs and making dinner reservations for us on Christmas Day. They made us feel like the only two people in the hotel and that it was their job to insure that we had a wonderful holiday.
On Christmas Eve I gave my wife her engagment ring and we had dinner in the hotel restaurant where we were the only two customers. Our waiter managed to make us feel like royalty as we ate locally caught trout by candlelight.
