One of the prettiest spots in a country blessed with stunning natural beauty, the isolated village of Batad in the Cordilleras mountains of northern Luzon (the big island Manila is on) makes an excellent change of pace from the beaches-and-more-beaches itineraries many people stick to when visiting the Philippines. Two hours down a rough mountain road from the major highway at Banaue, the town lies in a secluded valley a further 30 minutes down a footpath (that's right: no traffic!), surrounded by magnificently steep step-terraced mountainside rising in an amphitheater around the village. There's a number of great short hikes in the area, including the spectacular walk to nearby Tappia Falls, with excellent (if chilly!) swimming.

Definitely the most spectacular of all the region's rice terrace. The trek and spending a night in Batad is certainly one of the highlights of the Philippines and of all southeast Asia I would say. The human-built stone terraces are staggeringly difficult to comprehend. Two-thousand years in the making. The village and terraces are a UNESCO site. Spending the night here is an amazing experience and one that is far from the noise and exhaust of the usual Philippine cities.
