I was fascinated by my experience at the Batu Caves. The caves are very sacred for the Hindu population in Malaysia and the Indian diaspora. The Hindu Temple can only be reached by walking up to, what seemed to be an endless walk, to the top. If you can make it to the top, you're in for a wonderful experience. I had a bit of a problem getting there, because Muslim cabdrivers didn't want to take me to a Hindu religious site, so I had to board a bus with my map, and get there on my own.

We did Batu Caves as part of a package that took us to a place with exotic animals. Batu made for some of the best photo opportunities I had on my six week backpacking adventure throughout southeast asia. You only need an hour here.Recommended for:Backpackers

A good place to go and say that you've been there but that's it at best. It's free so why not go climb the 720 steps to the top. It's an easy walk because the steps are very short. The monkeys are cool but are on edge from what seems to be people aggravating them constantly.

Monkeys, Hindu gods, snakes and iguanas all peacefully coexist in this spectacular limestone cave. The tourists outnumbered the worshipers of Durga when I was there but once a year the place is a virtual bloodbath of faith with all kinds of piercings and self-flagelation going down in honor of the gods. Check the website for details (if you're into that kinda thing).
