The hordes of people waiting to order their sandwiches during busy lunch hours at this Italian food paradise, which has been around since 1925, can be overwhelming. Those in the know order online and pick up their sandwiches from the pick up counter on the other side of the store. Try the most popular sandwich, the “Godmother”, if you like cold cuts. There are also daily specials such as Eggplant Parmigiana. Pick up desserts and drinks at the gourmet store and you’re set for a picnic on the beach. 1517 Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica.

Save some money by ordering the chicken salad or tuna salad thats already pre-packaged and a fresh slice of bread! It'll come out to less than 4 bux for an awesome chicken salad sandwich.

Okay so I read the reviews and got their most famous sandwich, the GODMOTHER. It wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. The sandwich is okay, I didn't like the bread it was pretty hard to bite down on it. So it made eating the sandwich a bit tough. The large GODMOTHER w/the works was 8.80. I think its just an average sandwich to me, and I don't see why it was so special. Here's a tip, to avoid the longggg lines make sure to order onlineyour sandwich about 45 minutes before you decide to come pick up so that you don't have to wait. You just need to go to the wine section and pick up your sandwich and pay and eat outside. The big plus is that it has its own parking lot!

Santa Monica’s unassuming Bay Cities Italian Deli is best known for giant sandwiches with names like The Godmother. But it’s the deli’s eight-cheese mac that L.A. Weekly singles out as the area’s number one dish of its kind. If you choose to battle the shop’s long lunch lines, be sure to order the baked version—fans on Yelp warn the macaroni side dish isn’t nearly as tasty.

Get it: Godmother sandwich. Hot. And fresh made bread with butter.

Everything else is icing on the cake. Or in this case, sandwich. If you don't want to get extra deli items, they have pre-made sandwiches on the counter. If you do, however, want to wait in line for deli items, try the hot pepper salad. Also try their meatball sandwich. If you want to go really simple, grab a loaf of their freshly made breads and a stick of butter, and voila! So tasty!

The godmother is even yummier the next day - if you can wait that long!

Really, really excellent sandwiches! As everyone recommends, try the Godmother. I'm not a huge sandwich person, especially one loaded with meats, but this sandwich is very tasty. Prepare for a long wait though. Sometimes, they'll have a bunch of Godmothers premade if you want to run in and grab that. There are tables and benches outdoors where you can enjoy your sandwich right away under an umbrella.

Be a local and stand in line at Bay Cities. Grab sandwiches for the beach or prepared food from the hot deli counter and bring it home for dinner. The fresh bread is a Santa Monica favorite and the cheese section is great. All things Italian. Parking is tough around the lunch hour. Closed on Mondays.

Right around the corner from the apartment. The BEST hot and cold Italian sandwiches. Grocery store too. On Lincoln.

There are a lot of Italians in the valley so I'm spoiled by the authentic Italian sandwiches in my area. Bay Cities is just average to me. The bread is way too hard. I don't enjoy have the roof of my mouth all cut up by hard ass bread.

We ordered the famous Godmother, spicy and with the works. Our sandwich was dripping wet. I didn't enjoy how soggy my sandwich was but all the liquid did help soften the crazy hard bread crust up a little. The meat quality was good.

I like that they have a big drink case and you can buy pretty unique beers by the bottle. They also have grocery items and kitchen gadgets. The store gets crazy crowded on a weekend during lunch so make sure you get a number before you start browsing the store.

They have benches outside for you to sit and enjoy your meal. The best part is the convenient parking at no charge.

If your a sandwich fan, this place is a must visit. There are a variety of sandwiches to choose from but the must have is the Godmother. The Godmother has Genoa Salami, Mortadella Cappacola, Ham and Prosciutto as well as Provolone. The "The Works version of this sandwich includes mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, homemade Italian dressing and pickled hot or mild peppers. I would recommend getting "The Works" and make sure its a large. The taste of this beast will have diving in from the start. I wash this tasteful delight down with a ginger beer.

The service is great, just make sure you take a number. The staff is nice and friendly as well, and will make sure that you are taken care of.

Parking can be adventurous, as this place can get busy. The wait is well worth it, as the meal you will throw down will cater to your hunger needs.

My favorite Italian deli. GODMOTHER SANDWICHES! Whooo! If you grab a bread loaf, it will most likely be warm. The bread is really what makes this place great. Otherwise, they have great food products for sale as well, their cheese case is quite nice. My suggestion is to order online and pick up your sandwich from the back, it's much faster and you can zip in and out. They have a small parking lot, which sometimes backs up into the street. If you haven't tried one of these sandwiches, immediately go here, I'd consider this an LA necessity.

One hell of a deli in a city sorely lacking in delis. There is almost always a line and for good reason. Definitely a place you need to stop by to grab a bit if possible. You can't really go wrong unless you pick something you are allergic to! Even then, you may not regret it!

I don't even like sandwiches and I love this place, probably the one place I would go out of my way to buy a sandwich. Of course, the famous one is the Godmother - can't go wrong with that one! The bread is fresh, the ingredients are high quality and piled high. Who knew you could get such an amazing meal out of a mom and pop market/deli?!

I used to live right in back of "bay cities" and now I'm 20lbs heavier because of it. If you've had a chance to read the other reviews you know how good the "godmother sanwich" is so I'll just say its good, and move on to the lesser known, but great foods of bay cities.

quick summary: lasagna, hot wings, mac n' cheese, and broguilleres milk are all great choices too.

If you're feeling like you want something hot instead of a sandwich I suggest, getting the lasagna. Made at the deli the lasagna is thick with meat and cheese and comes with marianara on top and a slice of baguette. The lasagna slice may look small, but it'll fill you up and then some. Also in hot food area are their spicy wings; just the right amount of spiciness and flavor that you can't stop eating them. And for those who like things extra cheesy, I suggest the "mac n' cheese." One bite of this and you will never be able to have another mac n cheese; hands down I have never had a better mac n cheese elsewhere.

Honorable mentions: the milk from Broguilleres, in the back past the deli counter. This milk is produced in california and is only locally distributed. It is a little pricey compared to milk you would find in a supermarket, but its worth it. The freshness and flavor of it is the ideal taste of milk. Not watery at all and not thick like cream, this milk finds the right balance. And if you want something a little bit sweeter, go for the chocolate milk; by far the best chocolate milk ever. EVER.

fresh pasta. In the back where the groceries are, they also have fresh pasta and fresh marinara sauce. I would suggest buying these for any type of italian food you're making. Again it might be more expensive than the dried pasta and name brand sauces, but the difference in taste is well worth the price.

bread pudding. the bread pudding is delicious. Not too sweet and not too dry. But just perfect.

Where do I start? If you love sandwiches and you're in LA, you have to go here. It's a classic deli with classic deli sandwiches. They are made perfectly. The rolls are always fresh, and the ingredients are perfect. It gets really rediculously intolerably crowded at lunch and on the weekends. To avoid the lines, grab one of the ready made sandwiches. Just as fresh and tasty, in a fraction of the time.

I cannot disagree, the godmother is the bomb. All vegetarian tendencies out the window when I am here. I HAVE in my better moments tried the caprese sandwich which is another favorite for non meat eaters. The lines are long and there isn't much space, so maybe pick up and head to the beach on a nice day.

The best sandwiches in LA, hands down, maybe in the world. Local bias here, but still, don't miss it.
