See and be seen. Even if you have a reservation be prepared to wait. Great drinks and good food but it is rather loud.

This speakeasy was one of my favorite places in NYC. Make sure you have the address written down because you won't find a sign. After you've made it to the hidden entrance, you'll have a lot of fun drinking cocktails in teacups and beer in brown paper bags.

One of NYC's best and cheapest concert venues for indie acts, expect long lines and hardly any room to breathe on the weekends; however a concert during the week is the perfect local spot to hear a live show.

Economy Candy is the best place to find all your old school favorites. The store looks like it probably looked the same in 1972, but that's what I love about it. All the great candies from the 70s and 80s can be found here.

Rockwood Music Hall is a concert hall and bar for those who want an intimate music experience by listening to a musician bare their soul on stage. Seating is tight and the space is small, but with the glass walls, even an outsider passing by Rockwood will be intrigued by seeing who's performing on stage.

Needing a chill spot on a terribly windy Saturday afternoon, we stopped into The Standard and decided to take refuge at The Living Room, the low-key mod lounge located between the hotel lobby and The Standard Grill. It was much more mellow compared to the frat-ish Biergarten and the bustling Grill, which was perfect for me and my girlfriend to ...

This neighborhod wine bar and cafe is a great place to come for a glass of wine, a casual meal, or both. Their menu selections include a interesting mix of paninis, and if you like the food here there are not just one, but two cookbooks from this place.

Gorgeous venue, very romantic and gothic. I have several friends who are getting married there and I was on the event committee for iVolunteer at this space. There is nothing like it in NYC... incredibly beautiful. Photo from iVolunteer's Annual Gala Copyright (c) 2012 Guy Chan Photography - http://guychan.com/

Oh wow... The truffle mac and cheese is unreal. I was particularly ambitious when I ate here, and I split the mac and cheese with a friend in addition to the grilled cheese salad and tomato soup. All delicious. Definitely want to come back... It's pretty sceney in there, but not way too over the top.

The closest thing to a true market that I've seen in the US in a very long time. Essex Street Market is a great collection of independent retailers organized around a small grocery store. Booths include bakeries, a cheese shop, coffee shop, butchers, etc. Plenty of atmosphere. This is what the much more famous Chelsea Market should be -- local, ...

Washington Square is located in Washington Square Park and is one of the most iconic parks in New York City thanks to the arch. The prominent monument makes it a popular spot for meet-ups. Plus, the arch has been featured in classic films such as When Harry Met Sally, one of my favorite films. :-)

Walking around Chinatown is one of my favorite weekend New York City activities. Stopping for a steamed pork bun here, deciphering curios there, it's really one of New York's most interesting neighborhoods.

A New York institution, the Strand promises miles of books and delivers, on three floors and every subject imaginable. I love that it's independent, I love that it's a mix of used and new books. It's even somehow charmingly New York-y cynical that you have to check your bag at the door, and, hey, it makes for unencumbered browsing.
